About Christmas
According to historians, the history of Christmas can be traced back thousands of years ago even before the birth of Jesus Christ. It is during the Mesopotamians’ time where the celebration of Christmas roots.
Thousands of years ago, a feast called Zagmuk is being held as a celebration of helping the chief of Mesopotamia. The Sacaea is another celebration where servants become masters and masters become slaves. Similar with that of the Zagmuk and Sacaea, the celebration called Yuletide is held. This is called Yuletide as people celebrate the coming out of the sun after a cold and wintry weather. Here, people throw a big feast and bonfire.
These practices are believed to be the origin where the concept of Christmas begins. But all these practices will not be complete if the true history of Christmas does not have Jesus Christ as the reason. Today, in almost nook and corner of the world, Christmas day is celebrated for one and sole reason: the birth of the savior Jesus Christ.
There have been debates as to why the 25th of December is the celebration of Christmas day, when in fact Jesus is not born on that day? In truth, nobody knows the exact date when Christ was born however, the 2nd century A.D is said to be the date. If this is so, then Jan 6 is the day of his birth. However, the Roman Catholic and the bishop of Rome declared 25th of December as the official day of Christmas. This is the reason why Christmas season is stretched and celebrated until the 6th of January.
